The
Democratic faithful in Kodiak have a new party chair. Liz Fleming took over as
Kodiak Democratic Party Chair from Dick Ross about a month ago. As a snowbird,
Ross said he was away from Kodiak too much of the year and sought to be
replaced.
Fleming, an
attorney, came to Kodiak from Anchorage for a job with the State of Alaska
about a year and a half ago, but has since gone into private practice. That
freed her to resume involvement in party politics. She had previously been
chair of District 21 Democrats in Anchorage.

An
encounter last month between a fishing vessel and a whale in Uyak Bay ended
badly for the whale. Apparently a 60-foot Fin whale feeding in the bay on the
morning of April 17 wound up hooking its baleen on the anchor line of the
48-foot boat and couldn't get loose.
Marine
Mammal specialist Kate Wynne with the University of Alaska Marine Advisory
Program said the whale drowned, but the incident could have ended badly for the
fishing boat and crew as well.

Each year, usually in May, the Kodiak Senior
Center hosts a modest art
show. Paintings, quilts, fiber art and more are displayed on tables and on the
walls in the commons area. The
show runs through the end of the month at the senior center. Be sure to check
it out if you enjoy finding good art in surprising places.

The FBI is asking for help in
locating the gun they believe was used to murder Petty Officer 1st Class James
Hopkins and retired Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Richard Belisle last month
at the Coast Guard Communications Station.
Investigators
want to speak with anyone who might have sold or traded a .44-caliber revolver
in the last year, specifically a Smith and Wesson model 29, a Smith and Wesson
model 629 or a .44 magnum Taurus model. FBI Spokesperson Eric Gonzales says the
agency is looking statewide for information that will lead them to the murder
weapon.
The
FBI has contacted local gun dealers and questioned several people who had
booths at a gun show in March. Two weeks ago the Coast Guard Investigative
Service recruited over 120 members of the community to search for the weapon
along Anton Larsen
Bay road and in an area in Bell's Flats.
Officials have been tight-lipped about the investigation. A suspect has yet to be identified;
however the FBI has assured Kodiak residents that they're safe.
Anyone
with information is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
will vote tomorrow on the minimum level of funding for education. After
$854,000 in cuts, the Kodiak
Island Borough School District is hoping that the borough
will fund to the $10.3 million cap. The school district's budget is about a
half million more than last year's though- as school officials say- it's not
nearly enough to cover increasing costs.
